All of us at Wing are incredibly pleased to welcome Sara Choi as our newest partner! Sara will lead investments and help build companies across Wing’s areas of focus, with a particular emphasis on Digital Life Science.
We got to know Sara well during the summer of 2018, when she worked with us in a unique “dual-mode” role. She spent half her time with us at Wing, developing an investment thesis and investigating new opportunities. The other half of her time was spent at our portfolio company Juvo, where she worked in the product organization. Wing takes a highly engaged approach to early-stage company-building, so it was important to us to see Sara in action as both an investor and as an operator. She excelled on both sides of the equation, and we developed strong conviction that she would be a difference-making partner to early-stage companies and a valuable long-term contributor to our mission at Wing.
Sara has followed an interesting path on her way to Wing. She has worked alongside some deeply talented executives in product and marketing roles at Google and YouTube. She has also pursued innovative entrepreneurial ambitions at Ciao Telecom and Airfox (which she co-founded). Along the way she received 2 degrees from Harvard (in Biological Anthropology from the College, and an MBA from the Business School), and co-founded the Harvard Founder Network, a vibrant community of entrepreneurs that she continues to lead and grow.
At Wing, Sara will help drive our investment initiative in Digital Life Science. Our firm’s founding thesis revolves around the “DMC Shift”, which describes and projects how the combined forces of Data (and AI), Mobility (and IoT) and the Cloud are transforming the way businesses use technology, and how large swathes of the economy are being transformed by tech-enabled disruptors. Much of Wing’s work has been focused in four “power alleys” where we have deep expertise, and where the DMC Shift runs rampant: cybersecurity, data / analytics, cloud infrastructure and AI-powered business applications. In recent years we have also been developing a new branch to our thesis, exploring how data, AI and cloud-powered computation creates new opportunities in the life sciences. It’s a collision of biology, chemistry, computing and data science, which we call Digital Life Science. Gaurav has already made some investments in this area (including Clear Labs and Seer). We are excited to further develop this extension of Wing’s thesis-driven investment strategy.
Sara has hit the beach running, identifying new opportunities and working closely with existing Wing companies such as Juvo and Jellyfish. She is already making an impact, and we could not be happier to have her on our team!
